5 Settings to Change on Your New Phone Right Away

Just got a new phone? Congrats! ๐ŸŽ‰ But before you dive in, there are a few simple settings that โ€” if you change them from day one โ€” will make a real difference: for your battery, your privacy, and even your eyes. Let’s go through them one by one.

1. Turn on automatic backup

First thing, most important thing. Your photos, contacts, and chats are worth more than the phone itself. Head to Settings and enable cloud backup (iCloud for iPhone or Google One for Android), and set it to update automatically over Wi-Fi.

Golden rule: any file that doesn’t exist in two places should be considered as good as gone.

2. Review app permissions

Not every app needs to know your location or access your camera and microphone. Go to:

  • Settings โ†’ Privacy & Security โ†’ App Permissions
  • Deny location access to any app that doesn’t genuinely need it
  • Keep sensitive permissions on “While Using the App” only

This step protects your privacy and saves battery at the same time.

3. Set up screen brightness and night mode

The screen is your battery’s biggest consumer. Do these three things:

  1. Enable auto-brightness
  2. Schedule dark mode to run from sunset to sunrise
  3. Turn on the blue light filter (eye comfort) at night โ€” your eyes will thank you

4. Silence the noisy notifications

Notifications are the biggest distraction in your day. From notification settings, keep sound alerts only for what matters: calls, messages, and the apps you truly need for work. Everything else? Silent notification or off entirely.

5. Enable “Find My Phone”

If your phone ever gets lost or stolen, this feature is your first line of defense. You can locate it, lock it remotely, or even wipe all its data. Find it here:

  • iPhone: Settings โ†’ your name โ†’ Find My
  • Android: Settings โ†’ Security โ†’ Find My Device

The bottom line

Five minutes spent on these settings on day one saves you hours of headaches later. And if there’s a setting you consider essential that I didn’t mention, share it in the comments ๐Ÿ‘‡
